Nice to see this memorial to Gebhardt’s business. My mother always bought Geghardt’s Chilli. I wondered what had become of it. I guess when Conagra gets its clutches on a business it is basically curtains.

I recently came across an unopened bottle of Gebhardt’s chili powder from the 1920s and I don’t know if there is a museum or something that would want it.

  3. Hi. My name is Brenda Gavett Beamer from Belleville Illinois. My father, Lester Gavett used the Gephardt chili powder in a recipe I have that he wrote down for me. The name of it is Gephardts Mexana which he sometimes called it Beef Creole. He made homemade chili which he also used the chili powder in. I agree Gephardt has its own unique tangy flavor I love! My father was still able to buy it in the 1970’s I’m sure but I’ll have to check our Schnucks and some other stores near me to see if they have it. My father was a very good cook and was particular about the ingredients he used. I would appreciate it if you could email me and let me know if I could obtain a copy of the first cookbook or any other one that may be available. My email address is bbe 3469761@aol. com. Thank you for letting me comment!

I just found an old cookbook for Gebhardt’s “Mexican Cookery For American Homes”, dated 1923, at a flea market in northeast Oklahoma! It is so neat to see something like this, as I’ve never seen one before! Nice to know that the company is still around!

We have a 1936 edition of Mexican Cookery for American Homes. The cover is different from the booklet shown in your collection. We’d be glad to donate it if it would be a good addition to your collection.

Hello. I found a bottle in my in-laws house Gebhardts Eagle Brand Chili Powder. From reading your history it’s from 1960’s era when you joined Beatrice foods. It’s unopened! I wonder how strong it is!! If your interested in it, let me know.

  9. Liz Welch says:

My great grandmother was Emma Gebhardt Petry, Willam’s sister. I have a very old bottle of Gebhardt Chilli Powder. I also found a picture of Willie and Rosa Gebhardt in our old family pictures

  10. Cynthia Humphries says:

Do you know when they stopped selling the chile powder in glass bottles? I have several of the old bottles and am trying to get an approximate date on them.
    Thank you!

  11. We have been asked to give a presentation on our company, Fischer & Wieser Specialty Foods, Inc., next spring and in reviewing a presentation I made at the University of Texas in 2004, I noted that I had made a mention that Gebhardt, a German-Texan, had introduced the America public to Chili Powder in 1896. Like Gebhardt, we are of German descent, and hold the distinction of introducing the Chipotle Pepper to the American public. We did that in 1996, a century after Gebhardt’s remarkable introduction to the American cuisine. Ours is marketed as the Original Roasted Raspberry Chipotle Sauce™ and is sold throughout North America. Remarkable, isn’t it, that two German familes have changed the American palate in such a remarkable way? PS, my mother always used Gebhardt’s chili powder in making her German-style Chili, a very mild version, on wash days. We loved it!

My Grandfather worked at the San Antonio Texas factory for 41 1/2 yrs. Retiring from there. Name Antonio Alex and my Grandmother was a Chili Queen. I loved to take Gebhardt’s spicy devil spread (Spicy potted meat) sandwich for school lunch. I also remember seeing a flat round tin around our house called “Mexican bread” that were actually corn tortillas. Also had other Family members that worked there at one time or another.

My great uncle was William Gebhardt the founder of Gebhardt Chili powder. His brother Paul was my mom’s grandfather. This is a great exhibit on the family business!

  15. Love the exhibit! My paternal great-grandmother was Emma Gebhardt who emigrated to New Braunfels, leaving Germany about 1883. She married William L. Petry about 1888. Can’t find out if she was somehow related to Willie Gebhardt. Do you have any info, please?

Hi, I live in southwest NM, along the Mexican border. I found a very old Gebhardt Eagle Chili powder glass bottle in the desert. It was a fantastic find because the bottle had no cracks . My research on the bottle brought me to ur website. Neat history !
